Tool Making
Precision tool design and manufacture developed around the component, production process and long-term manufacturing requirements.
The Right Tool for Reliable Production
A successful manufacturing process begins with tooling that has been designed around the component, its material and the required production volumes.

Total Precision supports customers with product and tool design, prototype development and the manufacture of production tooling. The team can work from an initial idea, drawing or existing component to determine the most appropriate route into manufacture.

Tooling requirements can be developed for plastic injection moulding, insert moulding, overmoulding and precision metal pressing. Total Precision also has experience developing special purpose equipment for assembly, inspection and product testing.

Through established tooling partners in both the UK and China, customers can access different manufacturing routes according to the complexity, programme requirements and commercial needs of the project.

By connecting tool development with production, Total Precision can consider how the component will be manufactured, assembled, inspected and tested from the beginning - creating a more complete route from product concept to repeatable production.

Designed for
Production
Tooling is developed around more than the shape of an individual component. Material choice, production volume, moulding or pressing method, assembly requirements and quality checks must all be considered.

Total Precision brings these requirements together to help customers move from an idea, drawing or existing component towards an effective and repeatable manufacturing solution.
Tool & Product
Design
Total Precision supports both product and tool design, helping customers develop components with the intended manufacturing process in mind. A customer may approach the team with an initial concept, finished drawing, existing component or manufacturing problem. The requirement can then be reviewed to determine how the part should be produced and what tooling will be needed. Considering component design and tooling together can help identify practical manufacturing issues earlier in the project. Material, geometry, insert positioning, assembly and inspection requirements can all influence the final tooling solution.
Prototype
Development
Total Precision’s wider product-development capability includes prototyping and SLA models, allowing the design, fit and practical function of a component to be reviewed during the development process. Prototype components can support design evaluation, assembly trials and customer approval. The information gained during this stage can then inform the production-tooling route and help reduce avoidable changes later in the programme. We also offer mould flow analysis, providing a detailed insight into how molten plastic is expected to flow through and fill a mould. Using a drawing supplied by the client, we arrange for a 3D model and animated simulation to be produced, allowing the filling process to be assessed during development. For designs involving multiple components or mould cavities, the simulation helps identify whether each area will fill successfully and where adjustments may be required. It can highlight potential problems, such as plastic cooling and solidifying before reaching certain features, which could leave a component incomplete. By identifying these issues early, mould flow analysis helps inform component and tooling design before production begins. We recommend this service for clients developing complex plastic parts.
Tool
Manufacture
Production tooling can be manufactured around the component, material and required manufacturing process. Total Precision works with established tooling partners in both the UK and China, providing customers with access to different manufacturing options according to the technical and commercial requirements of the project. Tool manufacture can support plastic injection moulding, insert and overmoulding, precision metal pressing and other connected production processes. Once completed, the tooling can progress into production with Total Precision’s manufacturing team.
Special-Purpose
Equipment
Some products require more than conventional moulding or pressing tooling. Total Precision’s capabilities also include the development of special-purpose equipment for component assembly and product testing. This equipment can be developed around the operations required after manufacture, including component positioning, assembly, insertion, inspection or performance testing. Considering these requirements alongside the primary production tooling helps create a connected manufacturing process rather than a collection of unrelated operations. The result is a solution developed around the complete product journey.
